How many years have you been advising publications?
This is year 17

32 in publications, 83 in J1/photojournalism
Describe your space for us.
There’s the main classroom/lab space, an old film-rolling room we use as our pantry, a storage/tiny studio area and my office (affectionately called my panic room).
What do you think are some of the benefits of the workspace you all have?
There’s different breakout areas – tables at the front we can rearrange to have conferences or do hands-on projects, the office and even the storage room. Plenty of room to move around. And when they redid the storage area over the summer, they took out the old enlarger stations and put in shelving. So I have more shelves than I can actually fill at the moment. Also, we have lockers to store cameras/equipment.
What do your students like the most about the workspace you have?
The couch and the pantry, of course! I also added a “boredom corner” with things like PlayDoh, coloring pages and origami paper and they enjoy that as well.
What computer programs and/or apps are your staff members using on a regular basis?
InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, various social media apps
What tech equipment are your students using on a daily basis?
iPads, voice recorders, desktops, cameras, card readers, Promethean board
Aside from the computers and the program, what are one or two pieces of equipment that you have that you think other programs should have?
iPads — they have been so helpful with the cell phone ban. They can take pictures, record interviews, do the social media stuff my editor would have normally done on their phone. Plus we can add things like Procreate so they can make graphics.
How is your workspace funded?
We do have a small budget from the district each year ($1,000), but most funding comes from yearbook/ad sales.
Do you have anything on your wishlist for your space? If so, what are you looking for and why?
Now that we have a couch again, no!
