TEA taking public comment on statewide CTE Programs of Study affecting journalism programs until July 19

As more journalism programs across Texas transition to using CTE-based courses, it is important that publication advisers have input in the process of shaping the recommended statewide Programs of Study sanctioned by the Texas Education Agency.

In early June, TEA posted a draft of the new statewide Programs of Study, which set the rules on the prerequisites, sequence and high school/industry certifications associated with various CTE classes.

The proposed programs of study are scheduled to go into effect for the 2020-2021 school year and will allow Texas to meet the federal program approval requirements within the Strengthening CTE for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V). Most journalism teachers in Texas use courses associated with the state’s Arts, AV, Tech and Communications strand. Please review the PDF linked below before submitting your comments.

Timeline:
June 6 2019-July 19 2019: Public comment on draft programs of study.
July 2019: Revisions to programs of study based on public comment.
August 2019: Release revisions of programs of study to field.
August 2019-May 2020: Planning year for new programs of study.
September 2019: Launch application for regional programs of study.
December 2019: Application for Perkins reserve grants funding equipment for programs of study.
August 2020: First year of implementation of new programs of study.
